Putter Profile: Matt Vogeney (aka Vog Jr.)

September 10th, 2010

Bill Vogeney (aka The Vog) has been a Scotty Cameron putter collector for going on two decades (maybe more!). I always enjoy catching up with the Vog, so when he sent in an email about his son, Matt, I wanted to share. Here’s Vog’s email:

Hi Scotty,

I know you like human interest stories on your blog, so here goes. My 15-year old son Matt, (aka Vog Jr) won our junior club championship recently at Colorado Springs Country Club. In his bag? A Titleist 909D1 Comp, two Vokey Spin Milled wedges, along with a Newport SSS Slantneck Circle T tour putter.

Young Vog Jr has gone golf crazy over the last few years, and is playing every day. He’s played in several Pikes Peak Junior Golf events this summer, gathering two second place finishes in the under 16 age group. He’ll be a sophomore at Air Academy High School this fall, and is working hard on his game to make the varsity team.

Matt relied on his Newport SSS Circle T to make a couple of key birdies in the tournament. Not only does he have this nice Circle T, he’s also building a nice little collection of headcovers and putters as his budget (and mine) permits.

Hope you’re all doing well at the Studio.

Bill Vogeney

Really nice to see a youngster picking up the game and with an appreciation for nice equipment on top of it… kudos. Takes me back… when I was that age, I was playing at a muni and my whole set was worth less than that any one of those putters. I’m probably just a little envious though… keep up the good work!!

In case you are a golf junkie just like I am, you’re constantly researching ways to develop your game, because you are reading this article you almost certainly belong to that category. Among the simplest methods to boost your golf performance would be to keep the statistics. Let’s be honest, in case you are not really looking to improve your game what is the point? My partner and i end up finding ourselves playing the game of golf with high handicap golf players ( not necessarily that there is anything at all wrong with that), nevertheless I think it is exciting that many times they don’t really keep their own score.

It is with great pride that I can say I know both Vog and Vog Jr. Although I haven’t seen Vog Jr. in a few years now, I’ve kept up on the great milestones that he has achieved. I cannot imagine how proud Bill and Carol must be of Matt. Way to go Matt!!

Nice collection. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t hurt that his dad literally wrote the book on Scotty and his putters.

Congrats Lil’ Vog. I always enjoy reading your Father’s posts on TCC, and I hope that you have a very successful golf career. Air Academy is a heck of a school, and I wish you nothing but the best. Nice gamer, and I’m glad it’s working for you.

Thanks for all of the nice words guys. Matt just finished his varsity golf season at Air Academy High School. By year end, he became probably the 2nd best player on the team, and finished 7th out of 91 players from 23 high schools at the final metro league tournament. He shot 79 on a very tough track on a cool windy day, all while battling a case of the stomach flu.

His current gamer switched to an OTR Squareback about 4 weeks ago, and he’s putting very well with it. He’s looking forward to some fall golf to keep his game in shape, and will be at the PGA Show in Orlando in January 2011.
