Where’s your gamer been?

June 25th, 2008

I got an interesting email from Canadian Cameron enthusiast Dave Degroot the other day. Turns out he recently played a round at Yellowknife Golf Club way up in the Northwest Territories of Canada during the Summer Solstice.

They have what is called the Midnight Classic Golf Tournament where they actually tee off at midnight. Being the longest day of the year, they have 24 hours of light. Pretty cool! I guess course conditions are pretty tough with sand fairways and artificial greens, but nonetheless, the folks are out there playing all night.

Although I can’t post all of your pictures, I think it would be fun to hear about some of the far flung places you’ve gamed your gamer. Reply in the comments and I’ll be sure to post them.

Here’re a couple shots of Dave gaming his Scotty Cameron lefty 340g Mil-Spec, making this putt I should add.

What a great story. Afraid to say, but my gamer has never been to a place that close to the arctic circle! My gamer, in my bag since September 2007 (a Tour Select NP2 with an interesting set of initials!) has been to LA last weekend (108 degrees), Georgia the week before (95 and humid) Louisville in April (cold and wet), has been used at 7500 ft altitude in Colorado this year. It’s held up well!

My gamer went to Cabo San Lucas to play Cabo del Sol. It has also been to Pebble Beach, Paako Ridge in Albuquerque, NM and Pinehurst to play several courses including the famous #2. I am still waiting for a call to roll on the greens of Augusta

Those are some awesome pictures. My 2003 Studio Design 2.5 has was bought in Colorado, spent about two years in Montana and currently resides in Florida. Recently I have upgraded to a new Studio Select Newport 2 Mid and love it. The old Studio Design is now beside my putting mat for the rainy days. Thanks for the cool story,

Jason

Hey, that’s me! Thanks for posting this, I had a great time up there and the people were wonderful. An absolutely unique experience. That’s definitely as far flung as it gets for me and my mil-spec though I’ll happily be bringing it and others down to Niagara Falls in September for the Canadian Cameron Convention.

Thanks again!

My gamer (a Futura) has been to St. Andrews, London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Bangkok and Augusta.

It was going to be used at Pebble Beach last weekend…when it disappeared!

My 009 A005495 has been with me from Machias, ME to Orlando, FL (1,609 miles) all by car in January this year.

My 34/340 mil-spec found its way on to the Naval station Guantanamo Bay Cuba Golf Course. Its different when you have to bring a mat with you in the fairway to hit off of.

Great story Dave! Thanks to Scotty and you for sharing with the members of Club Cameron. My current gamer is a GSS Newport Cameron & Co that has been to Japan, London, and Paris in the last year or so.

This is an awesome story. Has anybody gone away to a far away place with the clubs only to find their gamer…perhaps the entire bag…didn’t make the trip?

Knock on wood, and I’d be devasted.

I’ve been a member at the Yellowknife Golf Club since I was 13. I’m 20 now and have been working for the Club for the last 7 years. I heard about the article from my Head Professional that got an e-mail from Dave Degroot. On behalf of the Yellowknife Golf Club and all it’s members we’d like to thank both Dave and Mr. Cameron for giving us a little advertising. It’s always nice. Please come back next year Dave. Hopefully it won’t be so overcast and cloudy. It’s usually much brighter out.

Thanks Again,

Distance wise my gamer (last years) has probably travelled a little bit further. All the way from Kilmore Australia to Elk River MN, then to Columbus OH, then to Saline MI. This year my Newest gamer, with a few more “travelling” companions will be doing the Columbus, Saline trip again.

Scotty,

My gamer (new gamer) is a Newport 2 Studio Select that my wife just purchased for me on our honeymoon in Hawaii at the Poipu Bay pro shop. I promptly put it in play and birded 16 and 18. I couldn’t resist…I put a hawaii 2008 headcover on it as soon as I got home. My wife wanted me to have something special to always remember the trip by and she chose a scotty. Did I marry a special woman or what!? Anything special we can do to it in the custom shop to make it a one of a kind keepsake to go with the headcover?

I had my gamer on my honeymoon in October of 2003 and played Poipu Bay with my wife and the club pro the week after the Masters of Golf Championship had been played there. The course was in awesome condition and we had a blast.
More recently in February 2007, I won the president’s sales circle for the company I sell for and took the same putter, Newport Mil-Spec PP, we played the Plantation Course at Kapalua just after the Meredes-Benz Championship. I am happy to report that I Birdied #18 after missing a 30 footer for Eagle.

This putter is pretty special to me not just because it was my first Cameron, but because I purchased it online in 2000 while I was hospitalized for spinal meningitis. It was the carrot on the stick for me, meant to be my drive to get myself well enough to get back on the course. I had only played a few rounds with it before being told I needed a follow up back surgery due to complications from the meningitis and hardware from a back injury and surgery that I had back in 1983. My surgeon said that the outlook was grim, but I always knew I’d come out on top because I knew I had more rounds left in me, I was only 38 at the time. It may sound corny, but the putter came with me to the hospital and I used it as a walking aid after my surgery. I got many different looks from people, but received compliments in my choice of canes from the golfers that were on the floor when I make the rounds through the hallway during therapy. Despite a few physical complications caused from the surgery, lower extremity nerve damage and a limp, I still play routinely and even out-play most of my able bodied friends.
This was my first Cameron and is still my favorite out of 13 Cameron’s and dozens of headcovers now in my collection. Needless to say, these putters can hold a lot of memories for a lot of different reasons, and this is one special putter that is still used during every round of golf and still serves as a part time cane when the hills pose a challenge to an old golf dog like myself.

Thanks for providing the tool for my inspiration Scotty.

All the best,

Steve

I played the Plantation course as well. I hit a 460 yard drive on 18 (not with cameron.) I still somehow got up and down for bogey making a great downhill slider for par in the setting sun after hitting my second into the hazard. The memorable hole for me was the 18th at Poipu. I horseshoed a 20 footer for eagle and taped in for an easy birdie and hit the club house for buffalo wings. Little known fact, the clubhouse at Poipu Bay makes some of the best hot wings anywhere!
